TREE REMOVAL: Florin Creek Park Multi-Use Basin Project
The Sacramento Area Flood Control Agency (SAFCA), the City of Sacramento and the County of Sacramento are working to minimize flood hazards in the Parkway Estates area and surrounding neighborhoods by constructing two storm water detention basins at Florin Creek Park. Construction on this project will be starting this week and lasting through October 2016. The first phase of the project is the removal of many trees, because the land will be reduced by up to eight feet and they will not be able to survive. The project will then sit idle until the end of the rainy season when construction of the basins and flood control improvements can begin. The landscaping and re-planting of trees to replace the previous trees, will take place at the end of the project.
The primary objective of the Florin Creek Park Multi-Use Basin Project is to provide off-stream flood control storage in conjunction with the United States Army Corps of Engineer's Florin Creek improvements upstream of Franklin Boulevard. Once constructed, these basins will significantly decrease the flood potential of Florin Creek. The two basins will be integrated into the park and offer enhanced recreational amenities. The park's overall acreage will increase by 2.8 acres. Additional sports fields and new interior park sidewalks and pathway lighting with ADA access will be added. The existing nature area and pond on the south side of the park will also be expanded.
