Every spring between March and April, Southgate offers a Lifeguard Training Course. This course includes American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) training. This course teaches the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will be prepared to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Course books, pocket mask, swimsuit and towel are required materials for this course.
Prerequisites: Students must be 15 years old by the ending date of course. Participants will be required to swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl (freestyle) and breaststroke while rhythmically breathing; and pass a timed test consisting of a surface dive, 10-pound brick retrieval and a total of 40 yards of swimming. The swim test will be held on first day of the course.
Note: The first class will be held at Rutter Swim Center. Classes will be held at either location depending on the activity scheduled. Transportation is not provided between facilities. A syllabus will be provided prior to the start date to indicate where classes will be held during course. Course books and pocket masks will be provided on the first day of class if purchased with instructional fee.
First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22)
This course will provide students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to give appropriate care when helping a victim of sudden injury or sudden illness. Students will learn how to assess a victim's condition, to recognize and care for life-threatening emergencies, to minimize a victim's discomfort and prevent further complications until more advanced medical personnel arrive. Students must attend every course session to successfully complete certification. This class is a requirement for lifeguard personnel in the State of California.
Junior Lifeguarding
The District offers a course designed for the older swimmer who is interested in getting a head start in the areas of aquatics and lifeguarding. If you are ages 12-15, join the Southgate Aquatic Staff to learn aquatic safety skills, accident prevention, fitness training and professionalism for lifeguards. Junior Lifeguard program participants will have the opportunity to attend aquatic staff trainings and volunteer time with Southgate's aquatic programs and events. Participants must be able to swim at least 25 yards, and tread water for 1 minute. Registration begins in April.
