Lifeguard Training Course
If you are interested in applying to be a Lifeguard at Southgate Recreation & Park District, please do not enroll in a Lifeguarding class online. Instead, apply for the position here.
- Applications are due by Monday, February 28. You will be contacted via email and/or phone regarding your interview and in-water skills tests, which will be held on Saturday, March 5 at the Pat O’Brien Community Center/New Aquatic Center.

- Lifeguard Review Course:
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Review Course is to give individuals the opportunity to review the course content within a formal course setting. The Review Course format optimizes a participant’s ability to successfully complete the knowledge and skills evaluation.
Registration in the course is not a guarantee of certification. Upon successful completion of course requirements, participants will receive the following certification: American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding with CPR/AED For the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and First Aid for Public Safety Personnel.
Prerequisite: Possess a current American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, or one that is not expired by more than 30 days.
- Lifeguard Instructor Course:
The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructor candidates to teach basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses. This course prepares instructor candidates to use course and presentation materials, conduct training sessions, and evaluates the progress of candidates in a professional-level course.
–Possess a current basic-level certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED
–Successfully complete the online introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the precourse skills session
-Review all instructor and participant materials
–Successfully complete the in-person pre-course skills session
Note: Instructor candidates are responsible for bringing an adult and pediatric pocket resuscitation mask to each class meeting
*The prerequisite skills evaluation will occur on the first day of the course. If you do not pass the skills evaluation, you will not be able to continue with the course and will not be eligible to receive a refund.

Southgate Recreation & Park District Refund Policy
Programs, Classes, and Activities:
Refunds and transfers are granted without fees for cancellations received at least 72
hours prior to the first class. Failure to attend a class does not constitute grounds for a
refund. Refunds will be provided if an activity is canceled by the District. A transaction
fee may be charged for cancellations.
Payment of Refunds:
Refunds issued in the form of a check take up to 30 days to process. Refunds may be
issued to your Southgate ActiveNet account to use for future programs, classes,
activities, park rentals and/or facility rentals. Refunds to a Southgate ActiveNet account
are available earlier. Southgate Recreation & Park District reserves the right to cancel or change program
offerings, park permits or facility rentals at any time.
